Turbocharger Diagnosis Process--Oil Leakage Diagnosis

Oil leakage at the compressor end (check whether there are obvious traces of oil on the compressor housing and outlet of the turbocharger)

1.Check if the turbocharger intake pipe is throttled or deformed

Yes: Replace the intake pipe to eliminate the throttling phenomenon

2. Check if all intake and exhaust pipes are loose or broken

Yes: Tighten the pipes and replace the damaged pipes

3. Check if the air filter is too dirty

Yes: Clean or replace the filter element

4. Check if there are oil stains at the intersection of the turbocharger compressor intake pipe

Yes: Check if the air pump is leaking

5. Check if the compressor wheel is damaged by foreign objects

Yes: Clean and repair the air intake system and replace the turbocharger

6. Check if the turbocharger shaft and radial clearance are enlarged (whether the blades are rubbing against the housing, etc.)

Yes: Eliminate the factors that cause the turbocharger clearance to expand and replace the turbocharger

7. Check if the turbocharger return oil pipe is bent or damaged, resulting in return oil throttling

Yes: If the return oil is blocked or bent and deformed, it should be repaired or replaced, and the return oil pipe should be kept vertically downward as much as possible

Error diagnosis method:

If you start the engine to observe whether there is oil leakage after removing the connecting pipe between the compressor housing outlet and the engine inlet, there will definitely be oil drops spraying out from the compressor outlet. This is not caused by a turbocharger failure, but because this diagnostic method will cause the internal pressure of the compressor end to fail to build up normally, and the lubricating oil will flow to the compressor under the action of the inlet oil pressure, which will 100% cause oil leakage.

Oil leakage at the turbine end (check whether there are obvious traces of oil on the turbocharger turbine housing and outlet)

1. Check if the turbocharger shaft and radial clearance have become larger (whether the blades are rubbing against the housing, etc.)

Yes: Eliminate the factors that cause the turbocharger clearance to expand and replace the turbocharger

2.For newly installed turbochargers, check if too much lubricating oil is used for pre-lubrication

Yes: Excess lubricating oil will be burned and no measures are required

3. Check if the turbocharger return oil pipe is bent or damaged, resulting in return oil throttling

Yes: If the return oil is blocked or bent, it should be repaired or replaced, and the return oil pipe should be kept vertically downward as much as possible

If the above steps do not solve your problem, please refer to other tests.

Other tests:

1. Check whether the crankcase is too full of lubricating oil

Refer to the requirements of the engine manufacturer and adjust the oil level in the crankcase to an appropriate height

2. Check whether there is sludge, carbon deposits in the intermediate oil chamber, or the oil return port is blocked, resulting in poor oil return

Clean the oil return chamber and the turbocharger oil return port, and repair the engine lubrication system if necessary

3. Check whether the engine crankcase breather is blocked

Refer to the engine manufacturer's maintenance manual

4. Check whether the engine has any faults (oil-gas separator failure, etc.)

Refer to the engine manufacturer's maintenance manual

Correct driving habits can reduce 80% of oil leakage faults:

Is the vehicle idling for too long (more than 20 minutes)

Yes: Avoid idling for long periods of time (more than 20 minutes). Just wipe off the oil. No effect on the quality of the turbocharger

Is the vehicle using exhaust brakes for a long time?

Yes: Long-term use of exhaust brakes can easily cause a small amount of oil leakage from the turbocharger. Just wipe off the oil. No effect on the quality of the turbocharger.

Is the engine in reverse towing conditions for a long time, such as long downhill driving

Long-term reverse towing conditions can easily cause a small amount of oil leakage from the turbocharger. Just wipe off the oil. No effect on the quality of the turbocharger.
